oooh! New, shiny!

When we bought this house, it had an Amana refrigerator/freezer, which has worked just fine for us for several years. Until last week.

Suddenly we had things in the refrigerator part freezing, things in the freezer thawing. We adjusted every setting on the thing to no avail. It was obvious the thing needed help, time to call the repairman. But wait, looking into the paperwork, we found the unit was nearly sixteen years old. You don’t repair a major appliance that old, you replace it.

So we spent a few miserable days of frozen milk and eggs, thawed meats and soupy ice cubes, doing research, and came up with a short list. With that in hand off we went to look at refrigerators. We started at Home Depot, which had a sale and the best price on the ones we wanted to look at. After a certain amount of door opening, bin rattling and looking at functionality, we settled on the one that we felt gave us the best combination of features and price. We spent more than we’d originally intended, but a counter-depth unit in the exact right dimensions limited our choices.

So we ordered it: LG 24.6 cf French Door (3 door) in stainless, counter depth, with ice and water in door. Plus, while we were there we bought a Maytag 15.8 cf upright freezer for the garage to replace our small chest freezer that had grown too small for our needs.

You want cold, we got cold.

Now all we have to do is wait a week for delivery, while wrestling with the faulty unit and it’s ills. Come on, September 8th.

I will never get over regretting my side by side. This looks perfect and I will bookmark it.

  2. Its never fun to have to make purchases like this, but when you do its nice to find something worthwhile. It does indeed look shiny. Nice!

    Judy wants one of these.

Patti, Barbara had a side-by-side in her home before we got married, and with the ice/water in the door, the freezer side was darn small. She never did like it. We had a French door fridge in California, and liked it a lot, though it was a different brand than this one.

Carl, the only bad thing about this was the sticker shock. The person at Home Depot was very good and we liked working with her through the purchase process. We’re eager to have it here.

  6. Richard says:

    Bill, go for it!

Four and a half days to go…

  8. Thank you again for stimulating the economy! No wonder the stock market is setting new records! We have two GE refrigerators, one in our kitchen and one in our basement. We buy stuff at Sam’s Club and BJ’s Warehouse (large amounts!) so sometimes we have to store some of it in the basement fridge. The kitchen fridge is for current food only.

    Nice!

What George said. I just got a second Kindle – a Paperwhite this time that Jackie wanted.

Frankly, I’ve always preferred the traditional style – freezer on top, no double doors or water dispenser. However, this is really nice and I like the way when both doors open the inside is straight across.

    Enjoy!

  10. we just got a shiny new wash machne

  11. Art Scott says:

While you’re waiting, watch out for food poisoning!

  12. Richard says:

Charles, that may be even more important than a refrigerator, or not. Toss up.

  13. Richard says:

Art, we have already thrown out more than half of what was in the current one because of the freezing/thawing thing. With four days to go, we’re slipping into things from our small garage chest freezer and eating out. By this Sunday night, the current one will be completely empty and cleaned out, except for the ice in the bin. Then there will be a Big Shop (oh boy!) to fill the new one.

  14. Cap'n Bob says:

Now the real fun begins, seeing if the hackers got your credit card info from Home Depot. And waiting a week for a fridge is awful. I hope it’s all you hope for.

  15. Richard says:

Bob, we keep a careful watch on our credit accounts. The week wait was due to the very busy holiday weekend, they just got that backed up, I guess. The new unit is fine, though anything new takes some time to adjust. We didn’t have to do that big shop to fill it, we just did our normal shopping and it will slowly be stocked.
