Network Nightmare

Whew! It has been a tough couple of days – make that a week – since we bought the MacBook Pro. One of the main reasons for getting the MacBook was so we could use it in one part of the house while the iMac was in use elsewhere, both accessing the internet, email, etc. That requires a network.

We already had an Airport Extreme, so it should have been a simple matter to hook up the cables and sign in to the network I’d already set up on the iMac. Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

Well, no. I spent several hours futilely attempting to get this done. So two  days later I went to a one-on-one session at the Apple store and described my problem. The fellow walked me through the steps, most of which I’d already done, but a couple of settings were different, and not the same as the Airport Extreme instructions (!). So I went home and made those adjustments. No dice.

Back to the Apple store a few days later, another try, still no luck. So this morning we called Apple Care and after 20 minutes on the phone, and a whole new set of settings the thing came up, working fine. Whew.

It’s all fine now, but what a hassle. And I thought I was pretty good at the tech stuff…

  1. My wife was able to set up our in house network. it took her a while. I never could have done it.

  2. Networking is a Black Art. I leave all of that to Patrick. But it shouldn’t take a Ph.D. in Computer Science to set up a home network. Nor should it have been the hassle you endured. Steve Jobs said a computer should be as simple as a toaster. A home network should be, too.

    No, it shouldn’t George. You’re lucky you have Patrick. You should rent him out for the rest of us! After all he’s usually traveling somewhere, right?

    In hindsight, we should have called AppleCare as soon as we had problems, instead of going to the Apple store for 1-on-1 lessons. They were not good at network stuff. All it took was a knowledgeable person to say “open this menu, click on this option,” etc.
