Witch Hazel

If you thought “fantasy” or “fairy tale” I don’t blame you, but in this instance it’s about our garden. We have two young Witch Hazel trees, planted about a year ago, pulled up and stored during all the landscaping work, and replanted when it was finished. They are both coming into bloom, this one,  Witch Hazel ‘Jelena’ with red/gold spidery blossoms has just come into full bloom. The other one, with yellow blooms, is still a couple of weeks away. Nothing else is blooming, so this is a real treat. Photos:

Yes, I’ll have a real post with a real book review soon. I just finished two books, just have to write them up.

Wow, it seems so early in the year for things to be blooming, but I guess I do realize that not everything follows a spring/summer growing pattern.

  2. Richard says:

Carl, Witch Hazel is supposed to bloom in the winter. We were just expecting it about a month later, but then we’ve had a dry and relatively warm (40s) spell these last week and a half, which may have triggered it. I have seen these bloom with snow on them.

  3. Carl V. says:

Those would be gorgeous blooming in the snow.

This has been one odd winter thus far.

  4. Patti Abbott says:

Our bulbs are coming up. What an odd year for sure.

  5. Richard says:

Yes, an odd year. Something makes me think we’ll pay for it, somehow. Today is the only rainy day forecast over the next ten days! January in Portland!

Patti, a few bulbs have come up, but not the daffodils.

  6. Carl V. says:

That is my fear as well, that we’ll wake up in May to record snowstorms.

  7. I’ve seen a fair amount of Witch Hazel. Lovely and with a cool name to boot.

  8. Cap'n Bob says:

When I hear Witch Hazel I think of that clear stuff in a bottle my mother kept in the medicine chest.

  9. deslily says:

wow, I have never seen a witch hazel before! They are fantastic! how big will they get?

  10. Jeff Meyerson says:

Witch Hazel is also a Disney cartoon character.

  11. Richard says:

Cap’n Bob – it’s made from a distillate of the leaves of this tree, though not this particular variety.

deslily – this is a smaller species, this one is just about 2 years old, about 3 feet tall. At full growth, in another decade or so, it will be 20 – 25 feet tall and about the same wide (since I’m shaping it to grow lower and wider).

Jeff – I’d forgotten that. What film?

  12. Cap'n Bob says:

Actually, it was Warner Brothers. She was the witch that harassed Bugs Bunny.

  13. Jeff Meyerson says:

She was also a Disney character, Capn.
