  1. Jeff Meyerson says:

Good list. Thanks for doing it. Now, unfortunately, I’ll probably have to order it.

  2. Jeff Meyerson says:

Except it’s the BLACK LIZARD BIG BOOK…

  3. Evan Lewis says:

Great list! Glad to see an Ed Jenkins story by Gardner and a Kennedy & McBride from Nebel (though it would have been nice to have an unreprinted Donahue too). I’m not sure what to make of the Lester Dent story. He had only two tales in the mag, and neither was called “Luck.”

“Knights of the Open Palm” is historically significant as the first Race Williams story, but I would much rather see one that has NOT been reprinted. The Gault story will be interesting, since he later expanded it into one of his first mystery novels. Robert Reeves’ Cellini Smith deserves to be in the mix – and is – with “Blood, Sweat and Biers.”

Norbert Davis, Raoul Whitfield, Norvell Page, all cool. I’m hoping The Maltese Falcon serial will be different enough to justify the space. But the two Chandler stories seem excessive, since they are available elsewhere. All in all, a fine collection, and hopefully only Volume 1.

  4. I have this on order. Finding time to read such a whale of a book is another issue…

  5. Richard says:

Evan – according to the acknowledgements, “Luck” is previously unpublished earlier draft of “Sail” from October 1936.

Jeff – I was TRYING to cut a word ot two out of a long post title, but no, you have to be a perfectionist…

George – I wonder why Laurie and I got ours on date of publication, and your and other people are getting it later? Either way, it should be a great collection to read.

  6. Patti Abbott says:

I doubt my hands could hold it.

  7. Richard says:

Only 1116 pages, Patti. It’s the size of a thick hardcover, except with a lot more pages.

  8. Walker Martin says:

Over the years I have already read many of these stories in BLACK MASK but I bought the anthology anyway. It’s only $16.50 on and worth alot more than this bargain price. Hopefully we will see books like this on adventure fiction and western pulp fiction.

  9. Jeff Meyerson says:

    OK, I ordered it.

Just trying to help – when I looked for it under the shortened title it didn’t come up.

  10. Richard says:

Walker – thanks or stopping by. I agree completely, especially about additional volumes, though I’m not sure Vintage would publish them under the Black Lizard banner. That wouldn’t matter, just as long as we get them into our hands!

Jeff – I knew that, I was just giving you a tweak.

  11. I’m with Patti: as I get older, 1000+ page books become unweldy. This bubba cries out for an ebook or an iPad.

  12. Richard says:

    Blasphemy, George, blasphemy.

  13. Thanks so much for posting this!

Now to clear off shelf space. This isn’t the sort of book that can easily slip into a packed shelf…
